I’VE LEARNED THAT I HAD UNDERESTIMATED MYSELF ALL MY LIFE AND BREAKING FREE FROM THAT AND FINDING THAT I CAN DO SO MUCH MORE WITH MY COOKING IS A FEELING I COULD NOT PUT INTO WORDS.

As I quickly use up what’s left of my accounting skills, I can tell you that 34-24=10 and therefore I had been stuck in a profession that I hated for a decade. So, here’s a little advice to any young creatives out there: follow your dreams but weigh your options. If you hate your job, it shows; it takes a toll not only your work performance but on your mental health. This being said, I do not want to tell you all to drop a well-paying job and join the circus just because you’ve got a sense of humour. Test the waters before you jump because you could end up scalding yourself, but never forget that life is longer than we think. Don’t limit yourself to anything just because that’s the road you set out on at the beginning.

I’m slowly but surely moving past age 40 now but learning every day and growing and nurturing my passion. I’ve learned that I had underestimated myself all my life and breaking free from that and finding that I can do so much more with my cooking is a feeling I could not put into words. In a way, I feel as if I’m finally giving something back to the timid, unsure teenage me. Showing her that she has so much to be proud of about her heritage.

To me, Shwen Shwen is not just cooking. It is the preservation of traditions, proof that we can do so much more with our ingredients and cuisine and belief in a country that is too often looked down upon.

People are like Russian dolls; each year adds a new layer. Although I am in my 40s, I still feel 34 and am gaining more confidence in myself every day. I am realising that I have already wasted too much time being afraid. I still feel like a teenager who wishes to say all the things now that I couldn’t say to those condescending eyes back then, and I still feel like a child who is loving cooking and creating more and more as the years go by.
